Best friends achieve an important milestone together

Best mates, John and Braeden

Both boys have regularly stayed overnight at Identitywa’s Nollamara Children’s House since they were young children.  It was there, and at Gladys Newton School which they both attend, they developed their close friendship.

“This is a big change for the boys so it was important for all of us that Braeden and John were totally supported throughout the transition,” explains Team Leader, Kathy Naughton.

“Considerable planning was required prior to their move to ensure their transition was smooth.

“For example, we liaised with their school and the school bus service so they could be dropped off after school to the Adult House.

“We also arranged for the boys to visit the house on a number of occasions so they could meet the staff and familiarise themselves with the new environment,” said Kathy.

“Initially, we even rostered staff from our Children’s House to support them at the Adult House.”

Braeden and John’s families couldn’t be happier about how the move has gone.

“The idea of moving was daunting at first but we knew it had to happen,” explains John’s mum, Liz.

“I have to say though, we felt very safe and secure knowing there was so much being work done behind the scenes in preparation to ensure a smooth transition.

“The new house is everything I have ever wanted for John- it is the right place for him to be,” said Liz.

“We are so happy both the boys are staying together!”

Braeden’s mum, Melissa, agrees…“ We had a lot of comfort knowing both Braeden and Johnny were still booked in together.  The place has a lovely feeling to it – I could move in myself!”

Kathy said all the staff are delighted with how it has gone for the boys.

“It really has been a success story and we are all so pleased they are happy with their new home away from home!”
